Fred Burton's April Pen and Sword Book Club Pick

2 MINS READApr 30, 2020 | 21:43 GMT

Wow, there were a lot of great books to choose from this month. Check all of them out at Stratfor's "Pen and Sword" podcast page on Worldview.Stratfor.com.

But one stood out. Our mission to provide the most actionable content - in multiple of subjects and with a focus on the geopolitical. That's one reason why Fred chose Peter Zeihan's Disunited Nations: The Scramble for Power in an Ungovernable World as his favorite this month. In his book, Zeihan argues that the current world order - globalization with superpowers dominating the stage - is nearing its natural end. Within the next decade, nations will become less cooperative and more insular.

The coronavirus pandemic could hasten that end. What once may have taken a decade, he says, could now happen within 2020.

While COVID-19 has affected every aspect of government, business, life and technology, it's merely exacerbating societal and technological disruption that was already happening at a pace and intensity never before witnessed.

Zeihan told Fred Burton that from the point that the word 'coronavirus' made it to the front page of global newspapers, it began changing the world permanenty. Because of the speed of its communication, nations have yet to identify a meaningful response.

We're talking about something that will take the wind out of the sails of the global economy, not for weeks, not for months, but until a vaccine is discovered. And that is likely to be longer than a year to 18 months.

The impact of Zeihan's argument is undeniable. Check his book out. And check out the podcasts at worldview.stratfor.com. There is a special subscription offer for podcast listeners here.
